What Friends and Family Should Know
A brain injury can be very frustrating for the injured party and very frustrating for family and friends as well. Here are some tips:
| When talking to someone with a brain injury talk about familiar names, places and interests. | |
| Show the victim familiar photos of family, friends and pets. | |
| Keep the victim up-to-date on what is happening at home and at work. | |
| Be patient. Give the person time to process what you are saying and time to respond. | |
| Realize that television, bright lights and noises may over-stimulate the victim. | |
| Keep the injured person’s room and surroundings the same. Moving things around will confuse them further. | |
| Never ridicule the person when they make a mistake or have an accident. | |
| Be positive and keep a sense of humor. | |
| A person with a brain injury should not be allowed to use alcohol or drugs as these will dull the brain even further. |
